Lego Crazy

 If you have a child you know Legos.  

My kids LOVE them.  They can't get enough.  

As a parent, I love them too; they can occupy my boys creativity and imagination for hours.  

As a mom anything that will keep your kids quiet while engaging their brain, when you're reading US Weekly trying to make dinner, is a blessing.  

Here's what I DON"T love about Legos...stepping on them with bare feet.  Seriously.  It hurts.  Back when Guantanamo was around this might have been an effective form of interrogation/torture.  Make the detainees walk on Legos until they spill.  It would work, I am sure of it!  

Another thing I don't like about Legos...building them.  I don't mean building a free-form ship, or castle, I mean, following those directions to build an ARC-170 Starfighter.  Don't you love it when you get all the way to step 24, only to realize you did step 2 wrong.  Love it!    My 6 year old is just at the age where he is starting to follow the directions himself, but mostly still needs help.  This is primarily because he doesn't want the Legos that are appropriate for HIS own age, he wants the super complicated cool ship that has like 4 million pieces!  There is nothing worse than struggling trying to build a Lego spaceship for your 6 year old while having him tell you, "no, mom it doesn't go like that" and him being 100% correct.  Schooled by my 1st grader...feels great ;)

I think anyone who is going to have a boy should be required to take a night-school course.  Lego 101, anyone?

But , here's the worst thing...finally getting that Lego Starfighter built after 3 hours of sweat and tears only to tenderly hand it over to your kiddo and watch as he dive bombs his Clone troopers with it.  What you are left with is 4 million pieces, yet again, along with a crying boy.  The joys of parenting.

With all that off my chest, I do really like Legos.  I think they are a great toy, as long as my involvement is limited.  Some of my kid's creations only solidify my stance in that they are geniuses ~ future architects who will add to the New York skyline one day.

Since all little boys (and girls too, I'm sure) love Legos I was excited to make these cupcakes for one of my 1st grader's classmates.

I made the Legos out of fondant.  They took a bit of time, but it was worth it.

I wish I had taken some pictures of the process, but I didn't.

I colored the marshmallow fondant, rolled it out about 1/2" thick and using a pizza cutter, cut them into Lego blocks.  To make the circles on top, I rolled the fondant thin, about 1/8", and used a drinking straw as the cutter to make the circles all the same size.  I adhered them with a paintbrush and water and let them dry for a few days.

Now, don't even get me started on Transformers...
