If you have a child you know Legos.
My kids LOVE them. They can't get enough.
As a parent, I love them too; they can occupy my boys creativity and imagination for hours.
As a mom anything that will keep your kids quiet while engaging their brain, when you're reading US Weekly trying to make dinner, is a blessing.
Here's what I DON"T love about Legos...stepping on them with bare feet. Seriously. It hurts. Back when Guantanamo was around this might have been an effective form of interrogation/torture. Make the detainees walk on Legos until they spill. It would work, I am sure of it!
Another thing I don't like about Legos...building them. I don't mean building a free-form ship, or castle, I mean, following those directions to build an ARC-170 Starfighter. Don't you love it when you get all the way to step 24, only to realize you did step 2 wrong. Love it! My 6 year old is just at the age where he is starting to follow the directions himself, but mostly still needs help. This is primarily because he doesn't want the Legos that are appropriate for HIS own age, he wants the super complicated cool ship that has like 4 million pieces! There is nothing worse than struggling trying to build a Lego spaceship for your 6 year old while having him tell you, "no, mom it doesn't go like that" and him being 100% correct. Schooled by my 1st grader...feels great ;)
I think anyone who is going to have a boy should be required to take a night-school course. Lego 101, anyone?
But , here's the worst thing...finally getting that Lego Starfighter built after 3 hours of sweat and tears only to tenderly hand it over to your kiddo and watch as he dive bombs his Clone troopers with it. What you are left with is 4 million pieces, yet again, along with a crying boy. The joys of parenting.
With all that off my chest, I do really like Legos. I think they are a great toy, as long as my involvement is limited. Some of my kid's creations only solidify my stance in that they are geniuses ~ future architects who will add to the New York skyline one day.
Since all little boys (and girls too, I'm sure) love Legos I was excited to make these cupcakes for one of my 1st grader's classmates.
Legos + Cupcake = Happy Kids
Legos + Cupcake = Happy Kids
I made the Legos out of fondant. They took a bit of time, but it was worth it.
I wish I had taken some pictures of the process, but I didn't.
I colored the marshmallow fondant, rolled it out about 1/2" thick and using a pizza cutter, cut them into Lego blocks. To make the circles on top, I rolled the fondant thin, about 1/8", and used a drinking straw as the cutter to make the circles all the same size. I adhered them with a paintbrush and water and let them dry for a few days.
Now, don't even get me started on Transformers...

These are adorable! Thanks for sharing how you made them. Filing this away for future birthdays...
You get the MOM OF THE YEAR award for making all those Legos out of fondant. Seriously. WAAAAYYYY more patience than I could even imagine. They turned out wonderful!
Adorable!!! My son would love them! He is now 9 and can build his own legos and then destroy them for which I am very grateful.
I agree with High Heels and Aprons - mom of the year! Those cupcakes are amazing! I cant imagine the time you had to put into those!
And from someone who had a brother growing up, stepping on Legos hurts a whole lot!
They look AMAZING!
My son would love Lego cupcakes!
These are just precious!
Now if you could show us some Star Wars cupcake how-to's I'd love it. :) My nephews are OBSESSED!
I have stepped on many Legos in my short 4 1/2 years of being a parent. It does hurt. Bad. But they do make really cute cupcake toppers! I can't believe you made them out of fondant. You have way more patience than I do!
Those are really cute. i don't know what else to say. I just love them!
Is that yellow cake I see? A good one?
My son is 5 1/2 - he is autistic - he has been doing Lego sets for two years and now he only does ages 9 or over (the "rest or for babies" and don't even get him started on Duplo LOL). He just finished the gigantic boat and thank God he can do them mostly by himself...we hear an occasional scream if a piece doesn't fit right...Love your work...I might do something like this for his birthday...and we're thinking about Legoland in June.
Those Lego cupcakes look awesome. I just showed my 11 year old Lego builder, collector these cupcakes and told me I had to make these!! I've never worked with fondant before so this will be a first for me. He loves Lego's, plays with them every day and thankfully builds his own Star Wars ships and AT walkers. I don't have the patience to put them together so five minutes later pieces fall off and he has to piece it back together. He calls it fun, I call it annoying. Thank you for the idea!
Oh yeah...my son has ALWAYS loved Legos. He rarely calls for assistance (he's 10)...only when he "can't find a piece"...which usually means he just doesn't want to look anymore. :)
Your toppers are so incredibly cute! He would LOVE them! He's having a birthday party in a few weeks and was debating between Lego and Star Wars...seeing these, I wish he would have chosen Legos! I'm a little nervous about Yoda cookies. ;)
Those are amazing! You are a great mom!
I hate stepping on legos! Ouch!

Oh man, I'm sorry about the fate of your legos, but at least the fondant kind made it through! What a GORGEOUS site!

Hi and thanks for your sweet comment! I'm so glad I found my way to your site too, can't wait to poke around. It's nice to "meet" you :)
LOL, my boys never played with toys. They had ZERO interest. Now sporting equip and balls? We had enough of all that to equip multiple amd various sports teams. :)
Your cupcakes turned out super cute.
~ingrid
You are so creative, the Legos on your cupcakes look spectacular! I remember the Lego days and they REALLY do hurt when you step on them.
your legos are PERFECT!!!
These are way too cute!
I have something for you on my blog:)
How cute! These are really darling. I can't imagine taking the time to make all of these- what great patience you have.
Love it! These are so cute! My daughter would love these... in pink and purple of course, lol.
Very cute! My son is begging for a lego store party this year! I was planning the same cupcake idea but was trying to come up with a way to get the circles on. Drinking starw...fantastic!!! Thanks! Love your blog.
Love your blog and your Legos are really cute. I took it one step further and bought the Lego ice cube molds from their website. I use the candy melts from Michael's and once they set up, they pop right out of the silicone molds. Kids love them!
