Waterparks or Chocolate?

 How's your summer going?
Mine's good.  Nice and warm :)
My husband is all, "For someone who says they like the summer so much, you sure do spend a lot of time in the air conditioning."
Ok, well, duh.
I like the sun and knowing that it is out there.
If I WANT to go outside and do stuff, I can.  But if I don't want to...it's all good in the nice 72 degree house.
He clearly doesn't get it.
So, yesterday was one of those days that I decided to enjoy the sun...all day...at a water park.
Mmmm hmm.
Kinda makes me re-think the whole summer thing.
I am not a water park kinda gal.  I mean, I get the appeal.
But the reality of the situation isn't...well...isn't appealing, ya know?
I learned yesterday that while going down the tube slide in a inflatable donut is fun, the 137 stairs you have to climb carrying said donut isn't so fun.
Ladies, you know what I am talking about here...climbing the stairs, thighs rubbing together, with your cooly at the person behind you's eye level.
The things that go through your mind are ridiculous...
I should have spent more time shaving the back of my thighs...
Are they staring right at my tush?
I shouldn't have spent so much time tanning only my front.
Maybe I should have gone for the skirt swim suit this year.
Then finally you get up to the top, slide down in a fit of fear and adrenaline, all to hear your little guy say, "C'mon mom...let's do it again!"...and again and again...
Stairs here we come!
Next let's talk seating.
We are all adults here, yes?
Can I just say that it is not cool to reserve 11 lounge chairs for a group of 4 people.  A pair of goggles on a chair doesn't count...
...or a bottle of sunscreen, or a pair of sunglasses.
To completely reserve a seat you have to prove that you are not one person who has put every item they own on all the chairs in the perimeter.
I have seen fights break out over whether or not a hair scrunchie was a "chair claimer".
Let's not get into the fact that the lady was wearing a hair scrunchie to begin with, but you get the idea.
Multiple towels, beach bags, coolers...all acceptable.
One lone flip flop doesn't a lounge chair reservation make.
Plus, we all know that you aren't going to be sitting that much.
Water parks are not relaxing.  That's a fact.
You are constantly counting children, going to the slimy floored bathrooms, ponying up $6 for a hot dog, or climbing aforementioned steps.
The moms (myself included) who plan a "fun" outing for their kids are transformed into
rageaholics by the time the sun sets.
Sunscreen, tantrums, the dreaded gift shop, swimmy diapers, coolers that weigh 75 pounds.
It's a lot of work.
But, we do it for the children, right.
They are the future and all that.

So, if you have decided to skip the waterpark today and stay home, give these yummies a try.  They are a no-bake recipe, so you don't even have to worry about the oven heat messing with your perfect air conditioned temperature.
Plus you get to ponder the very important question...
Salty and Sweet Pretzel Fudge
adapted from Woman's Day

Makes approx 36 squares
1 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (milk would be good too)
4oz unsweetened baking chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 stick  butter
60 Saltine crackers, finely crushed (about 1 1/2 sleeves)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup toffee bits or Heath Bits
3 cups bite-size pretzels
Line a 9x9" pan with foil...don't skip this step!
Melt both chocolates and the butter in a large bowl in microwave on low/defrost setting in 30 second intervals (stirring each time) until melted and smooth.
Stir in Saltines, sweetened condensed milk and toffee bits until blended.
 Fold in 2 cups pretzels.
Spread in prepared pan.
Press remaining pretzels on top.
Cover and refrigerate at least 11/2 hours or until firm.
Lift foil by ends onto cutting board and cut into squares.
Now, get out there and enjoy your air conditioning!

You are so funny and I totally agree with you! Water park + wearing a bathing suit + a toddler = desaster.
I love ther recipe!

I was one of those weird kids who absolutely hated water parks. The slides scared me ridiculously much. I always felt like I was going to drown when I reached the bottom. My mom perpetuated this idea. For obvious reasons.

I'd much rather have fudge anyway. Especially sweet and salty!

Oh my hell! That is so funny and so incredibly true! You left out the giant wedgy from whooshing down the tube/slide. No thanks. I'll pick chocolate anytime! =o)

And your fudge sounds HEAVENLY!!!

Oh those goodies do look yummy! I love no bake recipes, especially for the summer as we don't have AC except in the bedrooms and office.
My kids are old enough to go to the water park alone, thank goodness! I am definatly not a water park kind of gal.
I have a friend who is a very large gal, VERY large, she went down the waterslide and no one mentioned to her that the heavier you are the faster you will go. She went around the curves so fast and wild that she almost flew over the top of the slide wall. She will not be doing that again! LOL

Oh I have to make these!

I hate water parks. You can never find a seat, everything is so expensive, and also, I'm scared of the big slide.

There, I said it.

I just keep hoping that my son will never find out that water parks exist. I'm sure it's just a matter of time til someone spills the beans, though.

Fudge looks awesome, I really love sweet and salty combos. The fact that it's no bake is a bonus!! :)

I LOVE the pretzel-chocolate combo. I can't wait to try this. And thanks for adding the printable version link for your recipes - super helpful!!

so funny you mention that in the post because we passed by the main community water park today (ironically seconds after devulging a love/hate relationship with sunny summer. i mean just how hot can one handle?) but my only problem is...i am still trying to fight my informal OCD about water, um, like, the public kind. the kind people pee in, kiss in and all around do secret mischievous activities. how do you get past that haha

I love sweet and salty together! These look great!
I laughed at this post from top to bottom! :)

....not to mention the L-O-N-G lines to stand in with the sun beating down on you, all for 30 seconds of cool fun! And, at the end of the day, I get to take my tired, whining kids home with me!! But, they usually sleep on the drive home.
The fudge sounds like a more appealing option.

Oh my gosh - too funny and totally true. Every single word. LOL

The fudge sounds awesome and you can't go wrong with no-bake in this heat. Do the pretzels get soft in the fudge or do they keep their crunch?

cookies and cups said...

OOD ~ They keep their crunch nicely.
It is a very chocolaty fudge, obvs due to semi-sweet and unsweetened chocolate. Next time I will try with milk instead of semi-sweet. I am sure that will be good!

Chocolate and pretzels are the best. Love the contrast of sweet and salty :)

I was never a big fan of the water park. The cooly going up the steps...scary! And totally hilarious at the same time. I hope you had these beauties waiting for you when you came home. I would of eaten half the batch trying to comfort myself!

That looks great. I love the combo of pretzels and chocolate.

I have never liked waterparks either. Something about playing in water that 1000s of other people bathed in doesn't appeal to me, no matter how much chlorine they dumped in. Anyway, the sweet and salty combination sounds very appetizing. I'd take that over sweating in a waterpark anytime :)

You are so funny! I remember the waterpark days when my kids were younger..you are right...not fun. My kids are older now and we did the Disney waterparks recently and it actually was fun, the prancing around with a bathing suit on never really gets fun though:)

Great recipe. Sweet and salty is my favorite...looks delish!

Haha! Loved your description! I would choose your fudge anyday over the waterpark...chocolate and pretzels, mmm!

you said it all--those blasted stairs and everything involved with them make one really reconsider if it's worth it for an oh-so-brief rush of adrenaline. :)
AWESOME bars!

Wow, this is a new perspective on waterparks. I usually love them :P Maybe that's because I'm still a child at heart, and have never had to go with a child!!

I wish I had a panful of those treats now :(

I love chocolate and salt! Yum! I'll be linking. I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't a fan of water parks. Everyone always looks at me like I'm crazy!

The fudge looks delicious! And your thought process while at the water park cracks me up! I was never a big water park person...I'd take some of this fudge though for sure :)

Yum! I vote for sweet!

I don't know what I love more, the fact that you put all that deliciousness together in a fudge, or that you used a recipe from Woman's Day. I send you a virtual hug on both accounts, my friend.

I'm with there on the water park idea. Great in the planning stage-but it end up being a lot of climbing :) and waiting.
Love this recipe. I'm SALTY! This looks like a great no-bake recipe for those hot days you don't want to heat up the house!
Glad to see you got out in the sun and are enjoying the summer! It flies by too fast, my kids go back to school in 13 days! Seems like 1/2 a summer to me.

You said slimy bathroom floor and I cringed. THAT is exactly why i don't do waterparks. That and because that would mean I have to be half naked in front of people. no thanks!

Sweet. Always :-)

I share your disdain for waterparks, and a love for the salty sweet combo. First you lured me in with the reese's cones, and now your tempting me with pretzels and fudge? Holy moly girl, you almost know me better than my husband ;)

Wow! These goodies looked so sinfully delicious! If only I could eat those yummy treats right now, maybe I will feel like I'm in heaven. Actually, it's nice to look at and to eat these yummy desserts. But too much of these will cause pain and damage to our teeth. That's why as a chocolate lover, I regularly visit some of my dentists in Aiken, SC and have a regular dental cleaning to prevent my teeth from having cavities.
