I am gonna get a little catty here...so if you don't enjoy a "good-hearted" observation, please fast forward to the awesome cupcake pictures...
BUT, if you occasionally judge others from afar...or a-close...stay with me here.
I was at the playground a few weeks ago.
As a mom of rambunctious children we spend a good amount of time at the park.
We went to a park that is located in an adjacent town, you know, because the slide at our local park is way more boring than the exact same slide at a different park.
I don't make the rules.
So, while sitting amongst many moms I don't know, I officially felt very un-cool...or cool? Depends on how you look at the situation.
There were a group of about 5 moms...enough to officially be called a gang...chatting amongst themselves.
I was sitting about 10 feet away ~ close enough to eavesdrop but not be a creeper.
Let me give you a visual of the cast:
Mom #1 (the lead mom) - Clearly the ring leader...dressed in running shorts, sneakers and a T-shirt. She was wearing a visor, because she had apparently been playing tennis? Whatever.
Mom #2 - She was Mom #1's henchman. Nodding super enthusiastically at every word that Mom #1was saying. Unfortunately, though, she was dressed in mom jean capris, with a strange lace doily thing on the side (to make them fancy?), Sketchers Shape-Ups and 80's bangs.
Mom #3 - A more reserved mom, but obviously on the Mom #1 bandwagon. Dressed in Gap top to bottom she would laugh very loudly at everything that Mom #1 said. It was a little weird.
Mom #4 and #5 were not players in the scenario, but probably just sitting near the others to stay out of the line of fire. There is power in numbers.
Their conversation went from complaining about their kid's teacher...
Mom #1 - "Mrs. 1st gradeteacher just doesn't like little Spencer. I think it's because she's super jealous of my long lean legs and my super cool tennis visor so she's taking it out on poor Spencer.
Mom #2 - "Yes, Yes, she's totally jealous of you. Your super long legs are so great and that visor really makes you look super athletic. What do you think of my Shape-ups?"
Mom #3 - "HAHAHAHAHA! Yes! HAHA! she's so HAHA jealous!"
to working out...
Mom #1 - " I just got back from running 12 miles. My super long and lean legs are really tired. Spencer ~ Say your sorry to that little girl you just punched! (Turning to Mom #2 and #3) Spencer just punched that little girl...she must be jealous of my super short running shorts."
Mom #2 - "I run too. I listen to Eminem. He really motivates me..a true artist, so talented. I have heard he likes doily covered capris. Do you think my Shape-Ups will make my legs long and super lean like yours?"
Mom #3 - "HAHAHAHA! Running is so great! HAHA! I love your super short running shorts"
to their kid's soccer coach...
Mom #1 "Why is he always so late? Who does he think he is GOD? (Not kidding about that line..she really said that!)"
Mom #2 - "Yes, always late. Total God complex, you should really say something. Maybe he will be distracted by your super long legs and your sporty visor and be here on time"
Mom #3 - "HAHAHAHAHA GOD! HAHAHA!"
There should really be a National Geographic special on observing Mom's at the park.
They could have Oprah narrate.
It's really a lesson in sociology, or something.
Here's what I learned:
1) Mom's are no different than the mean girls in high school.
2) Listening to Eminem doesn't make you hip.
3) Loud laughing is obnoxious.
That is today's lesson..according to me, so do with that information do what you will.
Now onto cupcakes.
We all know Halloween is coming soon, so I thought I would share a fun idea for cupcakes that a friend emailed me from Woman's Day.
I hadn't seen a cupcake so cute in a while, so I knew I had to make them and share with you guys!
Here's how I did it...
First bake some cupcakes. I used sprinkles on mine because I'm addicted to sprinkles. If you don't share this addiction you can leave them off.
Next, assemble your supplies...
-white chocolate covered pretzels
-large marshmallows
-lollipop sticks
-food writer (or black icing)
also reserve a little extra frosting...you'll see why in a minute.
Cut an inch or so off the stick so it's not so long.
Flatten your marshmallow slightly
Next using your food writer or black frosting make a skeleton face...
Now you need to make his bones...
Slide on the pretzels. Here's where your extra frosting helps. It holds the pretzels in place.
Now stick your arm-less skeleton into your cupcake.
So, he needs some arms...
Cut the top of some extra pretzels off. Do this carefully, otherwise the pretzels break. Trust me. I had to eat A LOT of pretzel casualties.
Now, with some more frosting carefully attach the arms.
Voila!
Your skeleton has come to life...
Aren't they adorable??
Isn't Halloween a fun holiday?! I'm linking these up on Cupcake Tuesday over at Hoosier Homemade.
Now excuse me while I lace up my Shape-Ups and work off some of those pretzel scraps ;)

Those are officially the cutest Halloween cupcakes I've seen this year! LOVE them.
I can't believe how cute these are! :) And, yes, mom's can be no better than the mean girls in high school. Loved your conversation, BTW :)
OK, was just cracking up. Thank you for that! I'm so lucky to have recently found a solid, witty, smart, non-judgmental group of moms to commiserate with about our hitting, tantrummy toddlers! Over wine. Because I have witnessed just the same playground scenarios. Capris and running shorts and all. Agreed: Mom 1: What I'd call "Alpha Mom." Mom 2: Lacy doily on jeans never OK.
Mom 3: Mix up the Gap with some Banana Republic.
Mom 4 and 5: Find better Moms 1,2, and 3.
Oh, and I'll be sure to link to these awesome cupcakes on ediblecrafts.craftgossip.com!
Those are the cutest halloween cupcakes ever! I love the halloween themed recipes. And the mom's sound like a bunch of mean girls from high school!
These are just waaaay too cute!!!
Poor little Spencer doesn't have a chance with a Mom like that!
This, my dear sweet Shelly, is why I have more blog friends than real life friends.
Because a lot of real moms are weird and have make very questionable fashion choices. Plus, they think they are All THAT.
And I realize that noone says ALL THAT, but it is really the best description of what's doin' with those ladies.
Anyhow, I love the cupcakes and you, as usual. They look like Jack Skellington, who is my morbid son's favoritest EVER.
These are amazing!! You are sooo talented!
omg I LOVE THEM!!!
Funny mommy post!
LOL, Love this post. I have seeing just the same playground scenario, hate it! specially when I am at the park in my only day off of the last 2 weeks.
Haha, awesome.
And the cupcakes are fantastic!
Lol LOL LOL...Some Mom's are such catty little bitches!!! I know the exact ones you speak of!!! LOL
Love the 80's bangs. And the "Mom capris" CLASSIC!!!! lol
Oh lovely post dear!!! I love the skeleton cupcakes! Perfect party treat!
Those are so cool! I want to make them!
Love these cupcakes, what a great idea to use chocolate covered pretzels for skeleton bones! I got a kick out of your park story too!
These are so, so, soooo cute! And your mom commentary is awesome. I feel like I got a play-by-play. I bet doily mom has a drawer full of scrunchies, or possibly banana clips.
Oh my gos, what a great idea!! I LOVE THIS!
Love the cupcakes! Just adorable.
As for that Mom, I'm surprised that she didn't make the other little girl apologize to little Spencer for getting in the way of her fist. LOL! Takes all kinds doesn't it?
I love your personality and the mom story. Women/girls are so dramatic and gossipy, that's why i get along better with guys! lol.
Those cupcakes are too cute :)
The cupcakes are beyond cute! I wish I had the energy to make them. Your story is the reason I have been leery of playgroups. I can't stand the other moms!
That's awesome! Love them!
LOL, I was rolling on the floor laughing while reading your commentary. I know too many moms like that...it'd probably be more obnoxious if it wasn't so hilarious. ;-)
Love the cupcakes too - so festive!
What a great idea for the cupcakes. Yes mean girls grow up to be mean woman and once a bully always a bully. Peer pressure exists at every age. Isn't that sad?
Edit to my original comment, Parents are cruel some times. I have had several strange run-ins with parents who feel that their perfect angel (in school) can do no wrong, and it must be me who failed their child on the test because I hate that child, because the child is WAY too smart to fail my test, and why did I give a test anyway, because their child is far too busy to concentrate on tests, as they have to round themselves out in dance/hockey/soccer/football/insert random after-school activity here. ARGH!
These cupcakes are SO cute!
Best judgy post ever. Love it!
Ugh. I really hope I never become that kind of mom. Never. Ever.
These cupcakes are gorgeous. And this is one of the manymanymany reasons why you are the coolest mom. Ever.
These cupcakes are so amazing. I must pass this idea on to my sister. She'd love it too.
I love these and have never seen them before. The white pretzels make the perfect skeleton. Thanks for sharing all of the steps!
Funny story. I am so glad my kids are older so I don't have to deal with that stuff anymore.
Awesome cupcakes! Love them:)
HA-HA! Yeah, yeah! HA-HA! Those ARE the cutest Halloween cupcakes and everyone else is so jealous! HA-HA!
These are just about the cutest Halloween treats I've seen! How creative you are! And I loved the run-down on all those catty moms. You and I think a lot alike. I adore people watching (even though I often feel pretty disgusted by some human behavior). Thanks for sharing! These are my favorite cupcakes of the month!
There should be a reality show about Park Moms. It would be hilarious!
These are so cute and seem easy enough to make where I won't feel violent halfway through getting them done. I may just be able to pull these off for my kids. Yay!
hahahah the 'Mums' episode was really funny! thanks for enduring the conversation and sharing it here! And those cupcakes are seriously cute!
Mums seriously can be like girls at highschool it's insane! Whilst I dislike people like that..your cupcakes are another story! Fantastic.
Oh no! I'm about to enter the world of moms and I didn't know it involved a time-warp back to high school. Maybe I'll attract really nice and friendly moms with these super creative cupcakes :-)
-Kerry
I can totally relate to this, and you know what's even better....when these types of cliquey-conversations happen at a church potluck!!! Gotta love that one!
My husband has a saying, "the quickest way to get into a conversation is by not being there"! Those "friends" of ours that as soon as they get the chance, they're talking about us and stabbing us in the back -- so junior highish!!
At any rate....thanks for keeping it real, and your cupcakes are awesome, as always!
Such a funny story! Can't wait to my trip to the park today! =)
Looking forward to making these with my little one.
Those mom hang out here too but my motto is (stolen from Cougar Town) -"if I took time to worry about everyone who thought they were better than me - I wouldn't have time to do stuff" -- one of the best lines ever. Cute cupcakes.
haha I love your observation.. and these cupcakes are adorable! I saw them when I was in line at the grocery the other day and thought they were too cute!
ps found you through your friends on twitter :)
The skeletons are too cute! And great commentary about annoying moms. Haha, I always felt left out on preschool field trips with my daughter's class because I work and therefore wasn't able to be a part of the regular after school playgroups, etc. But listening to all of the petty gossip, I realized I wasn't missing out on much!
First off, I'm a nanny in a very wealthy town, so I hear you! I am surrounded by snobby, wealthy, obnoxious women all the time. Loudly voicing their opinions to everyone as if they rule the world. Gag! Makes me want to key their Hummers.
And second, I love these cakes. Such a creative idea!
Super cute!Love the pretzels!
And I love Halloween too, so many fun ideas!
Thanks so much for sharing on Cupcake Tuesday!
~Liz
Do you happen to live in my town? (except the moms here are never at the park with their kids, just their nannies) but a similar coversation could be heard at the baseball or soccer games or the PTO...! Very cute cupcakes, will need to try these :)
Oh my gosh these cupcakes are AWESOME!! I am definitely going to have to try this one out.
And I'm so glad I kept reading the whole catty story...cause when I was at the part about the capris I was all, "but..but...I wear Mom capris..."
I almost wouldn't want to eat these if I had them in front of me. They are so darn cute!
SOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!!! I love them!! Fantastic job.
LOL! I just found your web site but I thoroughly enjoyed that post! The cupcakes are AWEWOME! But possibly your story is awesome-ER! HAHA! Gotta love moms who think the whole world revolves around them and their "super long lean legs!" haha! Loved it!
I adore these!
Oooh what long lean skeletons LOL, sorry couldnt resist!
Shame on those moms!
Those cupcakes are adorable, Ive linked to you/them on my blog hope thats ok x
Sprinkles ARE addictive. These are THE best cupcakes of the season that I have seen! Wish I had time to make them for my kids' forty classmates.
And I love the park scenario; those ladies have it all wrong. I AM god. WTF? ya know?
Mind if I follow? I like ur sense of humor.
M...
These are awesome - so cute!
ok yours are WAY cuter than the magazine ones! I love them!!!
I love the cupcakes and the post!! I am a new mom and my daughter is only 16 months, but I guess I need to prepare for "these" Moms. HA!!!
how cute! i love this:) you're so talented.
I just found your blog from snooping around other blogs... what a laugh I had this morning!!!! So funny, because I can picture everything you're saying!!! That was really funny!!!
Cute, cute, cute! I need to make these! Love.
Haha that's funny about the mom's. I'm going to have to agree with you!
These Skeletons are sooooo cute. Very creative. I love them.
Just stopped in from Lorie at Be Different, Act Normal page! Glad to have found you. These are great!
um, I LOVED your observations about moms. So true!
I am in LOVE with these! How fun! I wish I could make them and give them out for Halloween to the kids! But I know no one wants home baked goods anymore! :-(
these are to cute i just might have to give them a whirl...
These a GREAT! These will be perfect for my son's 18th B-day party on the 26th.
These cupcakes are adorable! I love all that frosting :)
You are a nut Shelly- you totally had me laughing aloud everytime I read Mom #3's conversation.
This is what I think she'd say about these cupcakes:
Mom #3- HAHAHA! I LOVE CUPAKES! HA HA! AND SKELETONS HA HA HA! THESE ARE PERFECT. A HA HA HA HAH HA!
Way to cute!
Life is to short for means girls of any age.
Mimi
Thanks for the cooking lesson (and life!) lessons.
Just came over from Mimi's Kitchen and I'm dying in laughter about the "mom chat" you overheard. I'm a stay at home mom and I DREAD those types of conversations with those silly women! In fact, I avoid them at all costs;-)
The Halloween cupcakes are the cutest. My daughter and her friends would go crazy for them.
These are absolutely the most adorable things ever!! And loved reading your post. I overhear a lot of conversations too, and once they have left, we all discuss and laugh over them :P
OMGoodness...can't stand the cuteness factor!!fat
I've seen those adorable marshmallows, but never the cupcakes. Those are adorable!
And the conversation of moms was high school stuff. What's wrong with them???
Hi, I am your newest follower. I just wanted to let you know that I fell in love with these cupcakes. I included this in a collection of other fun cupcakes in a post on my blog. You can check it out here: http://www.PacificDesignsBlog.com

Thank you for that! Cracked me up. And the cupcakes were cute too!!
HYSTERICAL DIALOGUE!!!
I bought some white chocolate pretzels to support a Boy Scouts troop at the diner yesterday. Now I have a super great use for them. Thank you!
I think you must have been at a park around here! ;) LOVE it!
And these cupcakes are the cutest thing EVER!!! Thanks for the tutorial!
I love these! They are so creative. Wow!
Love the mom commentary, well observed and well written.
absolument superbe !
using pretzels in this way is just brilliant! what a fun batch of halloween treats. :)
The cupcakes are adorable... but you are FREAKIN hilarious! If anyone asks, you are my new bff.
Love the photos! Great job :)
These are so cute, makes me wish we could take homemade things to daycare - but alas, rule apply for food allergies. But I'm thinking I may whip these up anyway and let my 4 and 3 year olds help. Wish me luck - I am not crafty at the baking!
And your playground dialog - PRICELESS!
First let me mention that I absolutely love you playground dialog. While I was in college I worked at a daycare center so needless to say that I have had my share of these experiences even before I had kids. To be honest I think it prepared me for my own future and navigating parenthood loll. Next, I love these cupcakes!! I think a lot of Halloween Recipes especially for cupcake just involve uniquely frosting cupcakes but these are 3D and so easy. I work with Better Recipes so I am always reviewing recipes but this has to be one of the best cupcake recipes I have seen!
These are the cutest cupcakes ever! I can't wait to make these. And, I love your playground story. It is so true. Moms aren't any different than those high school clicks full of snooty mean girls. We moved into a new school when my daughter was in 3rd grade, and those moms had already been together since preschool. It was impossible to break into their gang, they were so tight. It's pretty sad, too, because they lost out on someone who really wanted to help a lot w/ school activities. Oh well, will it get better when we're older and our kids are grown up and we're at that next stage in our lives? I doubt it. lol Girls will always be girls!
LOVE the cupcakes. I'd say hahahaha to the conversation, but I'd hate to be Mom #3. Preferably, I'll have to tell you my legs are not long and lean, so um, I'll be Mom #2?
:) I like your observations.
I love your blog and SWEET TREATS. I just featured you on my blog and would love to post a picture of your cupcakes. http://obsessedwithcupcakes.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-favorite-halloween-cupcake.html
Have a GREAT Halloween
I dont know how i missed this post but I'm so glad I read it. You had me cracking up. Great way to start the day.
Your cupcakes are adorable. You are always so inspiring when ever I come to visit.
Wow! These cupcakes are really mouth-watering and very sinful. Kids and even kids at heart do love eating these kinds of luscious treats. But we must keep it in mind that we must not eat lots of sweets because it can really damage our body and our teeth as well.
Recently, my kids went to our family dentist in Columbia, SC and have some dental check-up because they ate a lot of sweets last Halloween. Our family dentist (West Columbia area) advised my kids to visit them regularly in order for them to maintain their good oral health.
Ok, just recently discovered your blog and I'm smitten. Your story about moms at the park just about sent me over the "LOL" ledge! Had to comment, I simply love your little stories before your fabulous recipes! Thanks for the laugh, now I'm on to stalk your previous blog posts! I'm almost a year in now! :)
