Sometimes I wonder when it happened.
The "it" being got old.
I am sure it has been a gradual process, but I seriously woke up one day last week and just felt "IT".
I will say that there have been little signs along the way, I cannot deny.
For example, shopping in stores that I have no business being in:
I was at the mall and I got an urge...skinny jeans. Now, I am sure that for some girls my age (34, ahem) they look great, but I will imagine that this is only the case if you are taller than me (I'm 5'2") and skinnier (yeah, right, like I'm gonna tell you that) AND if said skinny jeans are made with some sort of structure, properly designed for someone with "problem areas".
HOWEVER I, of course, went into a store that flashes neon, where there are no "even" sizes and Euro-dance music was blaring from the speakers. The "common sense" voice in the back of my head was telling me to turn around and go to the Gap, but I was on a skinny jean mission...it was going to work and I was going to be cute and hip. (stop laughing)
Now this store carries all super trendy clothes, clothes that you buy when you don't want to spend a bundle on "fit" and "material", knowing that next month they will be gone like Hammer pants. Clothes priced to accommodate a babysitting budget...
I raged on through the blaring techno music, and forged through the racks of stretchy, rayon-ey shirts. You know those shirts that are so clingy they make your belly button look the Grand friggin' Canyon. When did THAT happen?
Finally to the rack of skinny jeans that I knew were going to work despite all the signs that I had ignored.
Like Oprah says, listen to the little signs because if you don't, the universe is going to hit you like a ton of bricks.
Sign #76 ~ when I asked the girl for a dressing room and she looked around to see if my "daughter" was with me. She then snickered...I didn't need her help to get into a dressing room because....wait for it...
there were no doors. What the?!
No safe place? It was like a gym room nightmare. I had to risk the possibility that someone would see me trying to squeeze my thighs into these jeans. (Sign # 125 ~ the store was empty, because it was a Tuesday morning and everyone who usually shops in this store was in Geometry class)
Onward I went. It was going to happen.
Jeans around ankles, jeans around waist, Buttoned-up.
Mirror check.
uhhhh, I looked like an upside down triangle.
Abort abort.
Mission failed.
Peel off jeans and get the hell out of this horrible store where youthful dreams go to die.
I needed to go someplace safe, like Macy's or Ann Taylor.
Dude, when did I get old?
You see, it does happen gradually, but you realize it when you have skinny jeans pooled around your ankles, sitting on the floor of a dirty dressing room, sweat dripping off your brow, hoping the snarky sales-girl does NOT come back and see you stuck in jeans that you had no business trying on in the first place.
A ton of bricks.
Life lessons suck sometime.
Now, I don't mind 34, actually I am fine with it. Turning 30 was totally cool for me.
But I was asked to make these cookies for an acquaintance. It's her birthday and she is turning 40.
I have realized that this is my group now...I have more friends in their 30's and 40's then 20's.
It is a gradual shift, but I am there. I accept it.
Dress cute, but please no leggings or Uggs with short skirts.
So, I hope she has a great birthday and no offense in offhandedly calling her old ;)

Hi, I am having a great time reading this post. I am way older than you! I love skinny jeans, but I am afraid I don't fit on them any more, everytime I go shopping, for some reason I end up in the same stores you are talking about. Like you , I usually go during the week to avoid the crowd, stores are empty.Yes, the girls are in school. I adore the cookies, beautiful colors.
Loved reading your post, that dressing room story was great! And your cookies are absolutely fabulous. I love the color combo of pink and orange!
This post made me laugh out loud! The cookies look great and dont worry 34...isnt old! Enjoy :)
LOL!! I had a similar experience with skinny jeans - let's just say, they lasted about 2 seconds before being promptly taken back to the store! Great looking cookies!

A visit to Forever 21 will get you every time! Skinny jeans at Gap or Ann Taylor actually work on us "older" ladies, even if you are not a size 6! It took me a long time to believe it, but it's true!
Beautiful cookies!!
Gosh, we are the same age and I can totally relate. Who ever came up with the no-door-dressing-rooms should be kicked in the shins. I hate that!!
I will be 34 in just a few weeks, and I've accepted my fate for some time now. :) I can't even bring myself to go into the stores that the mall like H&M and Forever 21 and all the other ones. I get anxiety just thinking about all the clothes that are packed in there with absolutely NO organization at all. I'm getting hives just thinking about it, haha. The only store that I go in is one that has an entrance from the parking lot so I don't have to go into the mall. They only carry even sizes too! (at least in the "over 25 department") good times.

Gorgeous little cookies! Happiest Birthday.
funny post!
Love the cookies GREAT JOB!!!
I'm 41 and have to say I love this age and I still shop at the teeny-bopper stores (although I haven't run intothat dressing room style in years-I recall Joyce Leslie having it...did I guess right? We don't have them where I live now, anyway for adult skinny jeans I also find them at Ross, TJ maxx and Marshalls-and NO ONE there will laugh!
I laughed the whole time I was reading this post! :) Love the cookies you made. They are super cute!
Skinny jeans & I don't see eye to eye! LOL! Love the cookies.
These cookies are beautiful! However, I'm 22 and we are definitely friends! Also, I'm infinitely jealous 5'2?? I'll trade you! I'm 5'10, which also makes jean shopping very difficult.
So is it your birthday today? If so - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
It's my birthday too, and I only WISH I had one of your beautiful cookies right now!

34 is not old! At least, I hope not, since it's a distant memory for me... Seriously -- we are like fine wines, dahling, only getting better with age! (That's my story and I'm sticking to it...)
Adorable cookies, too!
I have a daughter your age and I like to think it's not old at all! Enjoy what is still your youth!
The cookies are delightful. Love the "cake" ones. Your work is really perfection!
I have become a follower and invite you to do the same...
Happy B'day to your friend...40's not so bad either!
34 is a baby....just you wait! I'm right there with your friend and you know what, it's pretty good here at 40 (although, I'm spending a little more in hair color these days)! ;)
Love the pink & orange together...so fun!!! Lucky friend!
Oh dear what a catastrophe! I gave up being hip and in many many moons ago but I do enjoy hearing tales :D
The cookies are adorable!
So funny about the skinny jeans. I actually just tried a pair on for the first time last week. They weren't for me either. I was in high school at a time where having your jeans tight at your ankles was definitely NOT cool, and it's so funny to me that that is the style now.
I love the cake cookies the best!
I think alot of woman regardless of age have problems shopping these days, seems like not alot of things are made with a realistic figure in mind.
Those cakes are so cute! I love the color combo and the gold dots. I'm sure your friend loved them.
i know how you feel - i just turned 30!! i don't feel old, but then again i do... i'm sure you know what i mean :)
cute cookies!
Haha! Cute cookies! :-)
I am 30 and already feel "it" your cookies look fabulous! I still rock uggs, just NEVER with short skirts! ;)
These cookies are AMAZING!!! I love love love them, especially since I'll be 43 in May :-/
I'm so with ya on the getting old thing sista. I only go in those stores with my daughter now, and they don't sell anything big enough for me BAHAHAHA
Still laughing.
The cookies are perfect for girls of any age!
Mimi
Love these! The color combo is great!
I just turned 40 and recently had a similar experience searching for leggings. Yeah, now I just wear them to bed. LOL!
HILARIOUS! I needed a laugh today, thanks!
Love the orange and pink together, and especially love the cake cookie!
Wonderful Cookies!
I proudly don't own any skinneys either :D..
"an upside-down triangle" lol lol lo lol lol lol
Now that is some funny stuff!
LMAO!! That was such a funny story! I'm right there with you!
Love the cookies and also your very honest post! We have all felt this way at one point or another!
LOL, were you in Charlotte Russe? That was part of your problem. You needed to go into Express. Better quality, better fit, unfortunately higher price. While I don't have skinny jeans...I didn't like them when I was a size zero two years ago I do have several of their bootcut ones. (I'm gonna start a new blog called blogging's made me chunky! LOL!) No acid washes or anything too distressed but ones still hip. :)

those are so beautiful! you are so talented!

Gorgeous! You are so talented!
I don't have a daughter your age, but I could! I'm 54 and stopped trying to be hip or cool a long time ago. Now, in my "old" age I find that my kids have always thought I was pretty cool and part of the reason was because I didn't try to act "young and cool" Go figure, who'd a thunk?
I found your blog a couple weeks ago and am totally enjoying it!
Thanks for making me smile and laugh! Oh and for some great recipes and ideas too! LOL
YOU ARE WAAAY TOO COOL TO BE OLD! haha My dad likes to believe that it's all in the mind and he's obviously, not very old I suppose. I mean, we fight for the cartoon channels. :) I love Disney and he likes cartoon network! Beautiful cookies, I'm seriously in awe! I'm definitely not patient like you.
These cookies look so precious. I absolutely love them. You are incredibly talented.
Oh sweetie, you're NOT old! Skinny jeans were made to fit a very, very small percentage of the female population (and some of the males, but let's not get into that). On most us, they are MOST unflattering. At 27, I cannot and will not wear skinny jeans. Heck, even when I was 17 I wouldn't be caught dead in them outside of a dressing room. It's taller-rise, boot cut jeans for my body!
And I agree with the others--you're way too cool to be considered "old!" Fabulous job on the cookies, as always!
These are just gorgeous! Loved reading this!
Robin
Just found your blog and love it!! Your writing is awesome. So are your gorgeous cookies! Lovin' your wit and candor. I often end up in the Abercrombie fitting room & I am late 30's. They probably cringe when I walk in, but heck the stuff fits so I wear it. xo
I love the cakes! They are adorable. Hilarious post! 34 is still very young, don't worry about that. And anyone can look good in a pair of jeans, so long as they have confidence! Never feel old, feel eternally young!
You're not old--you're just getting some momentum going! You go girl!:) Hope you had a great day
quel joli travail c'est très beau et ça doit être aussi excellent pour les papilles, bravo
bonne journée
Hi,
I emailed you.
I would like to see if you are interested in doing a Spring blog party. email me if you are interested :)
Diane
Lol such a great post and those r beautiful cookies.I'm 29 and i feel old too!!!
in geometry class.... haha!
I would NEVER try on skinny jeans because I can picture the atrociousness and that's all the sign I need.
What store were you in?
You guys are too funny ~ all the stores you listed are ones that I have been in and regretted, but in this instance it was Forever 21...and since I am not 21 and haven't been for quite some time I should have resisted the urge!
What a great post :) I love the cookies that you made, they all look so beautiful!
Very pretty cookies! I need to practice with my royal icing technique. I'm getting there.
Aww =). You might want to try an Old Navy if possible if you still want something like skinny jeans. They have the good kind that don't threaten to cut off circulation =). I once knew someone who was probably as tall as you, and by no means skinny, but looked fabulous in a pair. Better than anyone else I'd ever seen in them. Your cookies are fabulous! I love the colours and the little flames on the candles. & phsst, 34 isn't old.
I adore the cookies, beautiful colors.
