Camo and Cupcakes

So, I am not much of an outdoorsman.
It's unfortunate for my husband.
He loves being outside and getting sweaty.
He likes to hike on trails.
...and while we're on the topic of hiking...isn't hiking just walking?
Like, it sounds better if I say, "Phew, I just got back from a 3 mile hike"
rather than...
"Phew, I just walked the streets of my neighborhood while chatting with my girlfriend for the past hour."
I think I will say "hike" from now on.
Anyway...
The hubby also loves to camp...me, not so much.
The thought of sleeping outside in a tent, exposed to "the elements" is NOT my idea of a fun night.
Don't get me wrong, I love the "pre-camp".  You know...the campfire, the s'mores, the camaraderie.  But when it's time to turn in for the night I say sayonara to the campers and enjoy my night of slumber in the warmth of my 500 thread count sheets that are conveniently bug-free.  I do not enjoy the noises that the woods make.  I do not enjoy tossing and turning worrying that some sort of creepy-crawler is going to make it's home in my ear canal.
No thanks.
So, I sorta think it's a mature decision on my part to remove myself from the situation.  I'll catch you campers in the morning...when the sun is up and I am refreshed.  I think I am doing the pro-campers a favor by not being a fun-sponge...because trust me on this.  I WILL suck all the fun out of the situation.  You have not heard complaining until you have heard me in a musty sleeping bag at 2:00 am.  I will nag worse than a hungry 3 year old in the middle of Toys R Us 1 hour past nap time.
It's a fact.

But, here's where my world meets the outdoors...
Camo cupcake liners.
Cuteness to the 10th degree!
Green party Goods sent these to me a while back and I just couldn't bring myself to use them.  They are so sweet in the little pack, don't you think?  They are grease-free, so they don't lose the cute design when you bake in them AND they are made from cellulose to be biodegradable.  It's a win for everybody ~ go check out their site!
Since I was using the camo liners I wanted to try and make camo cupcakes...
They were for my son's baseball party, so I added a baseball on top made from rolled fondant.  His team's color was hunter green, so it all worked out!

To make the cupcakes appear camouflage I separated the batter into 3 colors...green, brown and dark green.
To get the dark green color I used green and brown food coloring.
I added 1 Tbsp of each color to the liners and swirled a bit with a knife.
They baked up great.  I like that you can't tell where the liner ends and the cupcake begins!
I frosted them with a dollup of green frosting
and the fondant baseball.
Here's what it looked like when you took a bite...
This is my contribution to outdoorsiness...ya like?

These are seriously adorable! I think these must make up for your lack of camping joie de vivre. I'm not a camper either. But I'll stay for the smores.

I am right there with you on he camping..lol. I have done a camper which was nice because we had a bathroom and were basically indoors but still had the fun of camping.

How cute!! I have become a forced camper since my son started cub scouts and has no one else to take him on the camping trip :P but if given the choice I think I would never sleep in a tent again

Those look great! I tried to do something similar for 4th of July last year, but they didn't turn out as good as yours. Maybe this year!

I really do enjoy hiking. But when done in a city, it needs a new name...I call it "urban hiking"! Check out my post about it!

These cupcakes are awesome, great liners!! I would join you at the Ritz Carlton anytime....camping not so much. Not my thing either. When folks say "hike" it should include some BIG incline, non?? xxoo

How fun! I like being outside, but not much of a camper either!
Your cupcakes look amazing, and I know what you mean on not using the paper cups...I do the same thing!

I hate camping for the same exact reason...the sleeping part. A few of these cool cupcakes could make it better though. I bet the boys loved them!

I'm in agreement on the whole camping idea! These camo cupcakes are a fabulous idea! My boy is nine years old. He and his buddies would think these were the coolest cupcakes ever. I'm pretty sure he's sick of the flowery cupcakes often in my kitchen! LOVE these!!

These are the coolest cupcakes ever! I bet you got the coolest mom award for these.
I'm a camper but we have a 5th wheel. I can still have my 500 thread count sheets and sleep where I know no yucky bug will dive into my ear canal. But I understand where your coming from. My hubby knew when he married me that if he wanted to continue to camp (as much as he likes)he better buy me a deluxe tent, WITH A BATHROOM!
He bought a 5th wheel! :)

Oooh, those are very cool! Love how they blend perfectly with the liners. I do a rainbow cupcake similar to these, actually (http://kuriouskitteh.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/my-diddy-diddle-darling/). Maybe I'll try swirlig different-coloured batters together next time instead.

I love these! I am doing an army bday party for my son and will be trying these. Did you use a white or chocolate cake mix?

cookies and cups said...

Erica ~ I made these with a white cake...I think if you were to use a chocolate, the green wouldn't show up..but I bet you could use chocolate cake batter to swirl into the vanilla so the brown swirls are actually chocolate.
Thanks for the comments =)
